Northwest Bronx Indivisible unreservedly opposes the loss of a constitutional right to abortion. contraception, voting, marriage, privacy in all forms, and every other right not specifically enumerated in the Constitution. An attack on the rights of individuals to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (also not enumerated in the Constitution) is an attack on our democracy. New York State Indivisible enumerated the problems with the draft Supreme Court Decision below, and we concur.
- An unelected conservative majority on the Supreme Court, appointed by two presidents who both lost the popular vote, is going to overturn 50 years of precedent and end our right to an abortion.
- Losing Roe puts thousands, if not millions, of people at risk – and it particularly impacts low-income people, people of color, and women.
- This opinion officially relegates people who can get pregnant to second-class citizenship, unable to choose for themselves how they want to live their lives.
- The Supreme Court is no longer an institution we can count on to expand constitutional rights. Their goal now is to roll back and restrict the rights we’ve all fought so hard for. This opinion signals the Republican Supreme Court’s intention to overturn marriage equality, end access to contraception, gut protections for people of color, and more.
Something that’s particularly important to understand: Your rights are not safe even if you live in a Blue state. They are coming for abortion rights and every other constitutional right we hold dear, in all 50 states.
Northwest Bronx Indivisible pledges to work to defend the rights of all seeking reproductive autonomy and to support only those candidates who support a democratic system of government. Never before in our history has a recognized right been taken away.
Donate to organizations providing reproductive services. A few suggestions:
Demand the Senate pass the Women’s Health Protection Act passed by the House. Tell your Senators you will not support those who defend the filibuster.
Political Action: Make phone calls, write letters, send texts, and demonstrate! Work actively for pro-choice candidates. If we can elect two more Democratic Senators, Congress can codify the Roe protections by passing legislation. THIS SHALL NOT STAND!
