NW Bronx Indivisible Amplifies Immigrant Students’ Voices
Our November meeting was something completely different: in collaboration with the Lehman College Office of Campus Life, we sponsored a launch party for the book Our Words Have Power, an anthology of poetry and essays by immigrant students at Lehman.
In addition to giving voice to these students, many of whom were the first in their family to go to college, the event also raised funds for food insecure students and for a scholarship fund established 2½ years ago with NW Bronx Indivisible’s assistance to support undocumented students who are unable to access funding from other sources. NW Bronx Indivisible members registered voters at the event as well.
The event attracted many attendees and significant attention; Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and Brooklyn City Council Member Brad Lander were on hand, and the event was covered by the Riverdale Press and This Is The Bronx. The book’s first printing sold out, and a second printing will be available soon.
